Christmas Session Style Guide

Halloween is over, and that splendid Christmas feeling is officially in the air! While I definitely am not one to forget about Turkey Day and all the thankfulness that goes with it (especially since I’m big, pregnant and hungry this year), I just can’t contain my excitement for the holly jolly season! To celebrate, I’m going to be doing some very special Christmas mini sessions – festive bouquet and all!!

When I was planning for sessions this year, I really wanted to own the way I styled the session. There are so many cute ideas out there for family and children Christmas photos, but nothing in Family Photographyland felt quite me. So I left Family Photographyland for inspiration, and headed over to Wedding World and Home Décor Universe to come up with something that truly speaks to me! I’ll be including a beautiful styled bouquet, some stunning Anthro champagne flutes (that I’ll be filling with mocktails garnished with rosemary sprigs and cranberries), and a lovely upholstered bench that I’ll be styling with a flocked tree and gold and white-wrapped gifts! I can’t wait to see the vision come to life!

With Christmas on the brain, I’ve decided to bring you a style guide to help you prep for your special holiday photo sessions! There’s something so special about holiday photos, and it can be a bit of a daunting task to find exactly what you love for them. So I’ve done some of the hard work for you, because I just love ya like that!

Because ain’t nobody got time for stressing about what to wear, before we get into the good stuff, I want to give you a couple of pointers that are good for anytime you’re having photos taken!

  1. Don’t be afraid to dress it up! You can never go wrong with a touch of fancy in your photos, and you certainly won’t regret saying yes to a dress! Dresses and skirts look most stunning because they really flatter every female body, especially on camera — which is probably why the red carpet is always full of so many dresses and not very many pantsuits!
  2. Be careful with patterns (though you don’t have to completely avoid them). While I love a little pattern mixing, try to think more texture and less pattern.
  3. Accessorize, baby! Accessories add extra dimension to your images and can be a nice tie-in when you’re coordinating with a group. Big statement necklaces bring a lot of pop to the photos, and belts, bracelets and earrings bring great visual interest. Choose one or two that don’t compete for attention.
  4. Don’t go too light on your makeup! I highly recommend going for false lashes. They may feel like “too much,” but beware: you will probably fall in love with them and want to wear them on the daily! I also recommend a good medium-full coverage foundation that blends well with your skin tone. Finally, show your lips some love!! A lipstick or gloss that adds color, as opposed to a lip balm, will keep your lips looking distinct and luscious on camera.

Without further ado… the good stuff! All of these are current styles that I adore, so you’ll be able to head straight to the links to shop… easy. peasy. And, as always, all ofthe options are beautifully photogenic!

If you’re wanting to go traditional, adding in some deep red is a great way to do so! Keep it light by pairing it with whites, creams and gold! Alternative styling: would be beautiful with a little girl’s red velvet dress and gold dress for momma.
