There’s something about fall in Memphis that feels like magic — the air turns crisp (at least for a few hours a day), the leaves get that soft golden tint, and families start pulling out their flannels and boots for photo season. Whether you’re planning your annual Christmas card session or just want updated photos that feel like your family, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite Memphis parks for portraits.
These spots are tried-and-true — they offer gorgeous light, easy parking (moms, I see you), and plenty of space for kids to run, play, and be their real selves.
If Memphis parks had a crown jewel, it might just be Shelby Farms. With wide open fields, tree-lined trails, and that dreamy lakeside glow at sunset, this park has everything a photographer (and parent) could hope for. I love starting sessions by the water and ending in the fields while the sun dips low — it’s pure magic for warm, golden family photos.
Bonus: There’s a playground nearby, so little ones get a treat after their “modeling gig.”
Classic, timeless, and right in the heart of Midtown — Overton Park is perfect if you want lush greenery and a mix of natural and architectural backdrops. The old trees create this beautiful canopy of filtered light, and the open lawns are perfect for movement-filled, candid shots (think kids twirling or families walking hand-in-hand).
If you’re up for a little exploring, the formal gardens and trails near the Brooks Museum add a touch of elegance without feeling too “posed.”
The Memphis Botanic Garden is a favorite park for families who love florals and texture in their images. Each section feels like its own little world — one moment you’re surrounded by roses, and the next you’re under a canopy of wisteria or next to a reflecting pond. It’s peaceful, private, and perfect for slow, intentional portraits (especially for little ones or maternity sessions).
Tip: The morning light here is chef’s kiss — soft, quiet, and flattering for everyone.
Bonus Tip: Bring the Snacks & Don’t Stress
Wherever you choose, remember this: the best family photos are never about the perfect pose, or even choosing the perfect Memphis park. They’re about connection — the way your kids giggle when you chase them, the way your partner looks at you mid-laugh, the in-between moments that make your family yours.
And yes, goldfish crackers, bubbles, and a few silly songs are absolutely part of the process.
Memphis is full of stunning backdrops for family photos — and each park has its own kind of magic. If you’re dreaming up your next session, I’d love to help you choose the spot that fits your family best.
