Guide to Doing Your Daughter’s Hair for Photos

As my daughter Isla grows into a beautiful, independent young lady, the days of me styling her hair for her without some loving critiques during the process have become a sweet memory. Now she is the one telling me the way to do things just so, and often she requests to style my hair! Oh how the roles reverse all too quickly. She’s my inspiration behind providing a guide to doing your daughter’s hair for photos!

Preparing your daughter’s hair for your family portraits can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. I’ve had plenty of practice with Isla, and have had the pleasure of working with many families with little girls! I know what a huge consideration it is going into your session. You want everything to be perfect, right?! Even if you aren’t comfortable doing hair, all of these style ideas can be done quickly and simply!

There are an infinite number of ways to do hair, but I’m going to break it down to the basics:

Up

Half-Up

Down

You can take it from there to personalize your style into the look you’re going for in your portraits.

Up

There are a number of reasons to put your little girl’s hair completely back for your session… the biggest being, to keep it out of her eyes, if your daughter sweats easily around her hairline, or you just want something a little different.

Half-Up

The perfect compromise when you want something different or out of her face, but don’t want to pull her hair completely up! Our favorite spots to grab hair bows for this look are Etsy and Noralee.

Down

Hair down is one of our favorites. It creates movement (which is always a plus in images!), and sometimes with the littlest of girls, is the only realistic option.

Accessories

The key to hair accessories is adding visual interest through texture. Linen, velvet and chiffon bows photograph exceptionally well, as well as wooden or metallic barrettes. And you KNOW I couldn’t forget our favorite accessory for any occasion…flowers! Whether they’re real or faux, a full crown or a wildflower stuck behind her ear, you know I’m here for it!
